The Most Scenic Locations For Landscape Photographers

Article by My Best DSLR Camera
Landscape photography is some of the most beautiful photography of our time. It invites the audience to celebrate nature’s incredible hidden secrets that are only captured through the discerning eye of a photographer. A sky becomes an endless ocean – a tree becomes a life – and without these talented landscape photographers, we would never know the true beauty of a rock, or a beach, or an island.
First on the list of popular scenic locations is The Grand Canyon in Utah, United States. Filled with shifting landscape and colours, shots of the Grand Canyon always appear to be unique, but breathtaking. The Grand Canyon is a safe and conventional choice – perfect for beginners.
Another American gem is Yosemite Valley in California. The river nestled between steep rock faces and snow -covered mountains offers a ‘rustic Western landscape’ form of photography. Reminiscent of Western Canadian Rockies (another excellent choice for scenic landscape), Yosemite Valley offers vertical contrast with a very ‘natural’ colour palette of greens and blues and whites.
A tropical twist on a similar colour scheme finds us in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji – a group of 20 islands. Situated in crystal blue waters and covered in deep green palm trees and white sandy beaches, the Mamanuca Islands offer the same ‘natural’ palette of Yosemite Valley with the warm, sparkling edge of Fiji. Contrast the islands with the bright yellow sun, or the pink setting sun, or even the muted darkness of a moon-filled sky, and you have a whole collection of scenic landscape photography.
In contrast to the Fiji-island-colour-explosion, the Sahara Desert offers a very one-dimensional day-time colour palette. The sand is a sandy colour and the sand dunes, while beautiful and unique, are also similarly toned. However, as the sun sets over the Sahara, flat sandy browns turn into deep bronze shimmer, and the exploding sun setting over the sand dunes creates a landscape photographer’s dream shot. The rich reds and oranges in the deep blue sky over the bronze dunes make for stunning photographs.
From sand dunes to waterfalls, another spectacular location for landscape photography is the Iguazu Falls in Brazil. Panoramic views of water rushing over the steep cliffs and smooth rock-face, surrounded by the Brazilian greenery under the blue Brazilian sky is nearly unbeatable. On the Argentinean, Paraguayan and Brazilian border – the Iguazu Waterfall can be shot from any angle and from every perspective.
Moving from fresh to salt water takes the landscape photographer to the Great Coral Reef of Australia. Again, the colours are simply breathtaking, and the coral reef is unlike anything else anywhere in the world. Whether shot from above or underneath the water’s surface, Australia’s Great Coral
Reef is bound to offer many options for a stunning scenic photograph.
As the water freezes, we move to a less conventional scenic landscape: Antarctica. While it may be necessary to bundle up tight, the photography potential in the pristine, untouched landscape is nearly unparalleled. Endless expanses of clear pale skies and shimmering snow makes for stunning photography, and while difficult to reach, it is certainly one of the most worthwhile trips to make as a landscape photographer.
Despite the view, it takes much, much more than a body with a camera to capture a beautiful shot. Landscape photographers possess the unique skill of being able to wait – index finger poised over the button that will immortalize their view forever – until the timing is exactly right. Until the wind blows the branches just so, or the sand just so – somehow – they just know.
